Quercus virginiana | Southern Santa Clara Valley

Here we see a Southern Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) growing in a subdivision south of San Jose, in Santa Clara County. Southern Live Oak is a remarkably consistent-growing oak species. Where hybridization and ecotype-based variation are the norm for most oaks, Southern Live Oak delivers a level of consistency that approaches what would be seen in clonally-produced types. And there are in fact clonal forms of Southern Live Oak, with 'Cathedral' being a successful cultivar in California. Experience with 'Cathedral' suggest that the tree will be relatively indistinguishable from species-type Southern Live Oak with maturity.
