Quercus tomentella | Goleta
The rarest of all California native tree-form oaks is shown here, Island Oak (Quercus tomentella). These trees grow natively only on select Channel Islands, at least in the last several million years, as the trees were present on the mainland in epochs long past. Here we see a multi-trunk specimen growing in Goleta, with a photo from the early 2000's. During the droughts of the last decade, the surrounding lawn shown around this tree was turned off. With the lawn removed and natural rainfall deficient, the tree has become stressed, and notably less lush than shown here. The genetics appear true to the native island strains of this oak.
