Quercus tomentella | Arroyo Grande
In the late 1980's, a purveyor of California native plants was able to secure seeds of Island Oak (Quercus tomentella) from its island home, and he was able to grow a set of seedling trees. He remembered where they had been planted, allowing a long term evaluation of the trees. Here is the best of a set of three healthy Island Oaks growing together at a location on California's Central Coast. From the evidence presented here, it appears that Island Oak prefers supplemental irrigation, at least on sites with well-drained soil.
