Quercus tomentella | Santa Inez

Seen here in Santa Inez, this Island Oak (Quercus tomentella) is growing nicely in a dry parking lot. Santa Inez experiences considerable heat, but the soils are quite deep. This tree was planted roughly 25 years before the photo was taken. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that Island Oak could see much wider planting in urban California, where there is a real shortage of urban-appropriate native trees.
