Quercus mongolica | Glen Ellen

Here we see the spring expansion of leaf and catkin on Mongolian Oak (Q. mongolica) at Quarryhill Botanical Garden. The coloration contrasts strongly with the new growth of Shields Grove English/Mongolian Oak hybrid (Q. robur x mongolica). It is unknown whether there is a color variation in new growth within Mongolian Oak, or whether the interaction of the English Oak and Mongolian Oak genetics cased the lovely pinkish new growth on the hybrid.
