Quercus rugosa | East Palo Alto
Sadly, evidence suggests that Netleaf Oak (Q. rugosa) is susceptible to heat injury. The damage seen here occurred during a historically remarkable heat event in the Bay Area in the late summer of 2017. Not all of the Netleaf Oaks planted along the 101 Freeway Soundwall in East Palo Alto were scorched, though several certainly were affected, as can be seen here. This was the first burn event seen in 15 years of observation of this ecotype, but with temperatures rising from climate change, and extreme heat events becoming more common, it will likely be wise to use Netleaf Oak only in mild or irrigated microclimates.
