Quercus rugosa | Gilroy

This photo shows a surprise - a 25 year old nursery-grown Netleaf Oak (Q. rugosa) growing at the former Bonfante Nursery outside Gilroy, California. The tree was originally brought to the nursery in the late 1980's, having been purchased as a small nursery tree, and grown into this eight foot box. This shows the California nursery industry has experimented a bit with Netleaf Oak, but never with the kind of systematic approach which would yield substantial information about the species and its ecotypes.
