Quercus oblongifolia | New Mexico

In many arid and rocky locations around the globe, oaks of a wide variety of types seem to particularly like rocks, and are often seen growing directly from the base. In most cases, it seems likely the affinity is because the rocks make a shaded area on their non-sun side, and this locations gives the establishing seedling the extra moisture, and protection, both from the sun and from predators. Thus is created the often aesthetically-pleasing juxtapostion of the two landscape elements.
