Quercus agrifolia | Nursery-Initiated Fatal Decay
Here we see the horrible results of combining girdle-and circle-rooted Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) nursery stock with constant summer irrigation. Severe root decay has been initiated and is progressing rapidly, creating a bell-shaped formation. The tree will not recover. A cross section cut through the area of swelling would reveal a chaotic melding of healthy tissues and decayed tissues, as the tree tries reacts to infection, only to have new tissues infected within the growth cycle.
