Quercus engelmanii | Fallbrook
An Engelman Oak from rural San Diego County, near Fallbrook. This is a particularly symmetrical and upright-growing specimen. These are great traits for an urban tree, in a state where the nursery industry provides a shockingly limited selection of drought-adapted trees. Genetically, this tree is quite close to the Mexican Blue Oak (Q. oblongifolia), in all traits. Some taxonomical authors claim that Q. engelmannii and Q. oblongifolia are actually the same species. Exploring both species in-habitat suggests a relation at once more subtle, and much more confusing.
