Quercus engelmanii | Santa Rosa Plateau

This might be considered the archetype of an ancient Engelman Oak on the Santa Rosa Plateau. Experience and scientific testing suggests that this tree is between 300 and 500 (or more) years old. The spreading growth habit with age is shared with most of the California native oaks, in areas where aridity forces substantial distances between trees, and where browse, rather than inter-tree competition, drives evolution.
