Quercus gambelii | Utah

On the outskirts of Salt Lake City, Utah, is Red Butte Gardens, the arboretum of the University of Utah. This photo was taken on the trails as fall turned into winter. The thickets of low trees are Gambel Oaks (Quercus gambelii), common throughout much of the Rocky Mountains. Winter is long in the Rocky Mountains, and can be quite brutal. Gambel Oaks generally only have leaves for half the year or less.
