Quercus gambelii x macrocarpa | Red Butte Gardens, University of Utah

This photo shows the location of the Cottam hybrid oak grove at the University of Utah. Shown here is the tree itself which is associated with the previous two entries. Again, knowing the growth habit of both parents, this specimen is clearly intermediate in form and canopy. The University of Utah is located in a foothill location, far above the nearby valley floor, with relatively thin soils. Thin soils limit the size of trees, and although Q. gambelii x macrocarpa is undoubtedly a moderately-sized tree, soil depth has clearly limited the size and vigor of this specimen.
